Reading EMD GP7s #605 and #601 in the yard at St. Clair, PA.

In 1966 St. Clair Yard was closed and the engine service was moved to West Cressona after the weigh-in motion scale was built at Reading. The cars in the picture are stored AD (awaiting disposition). Any outlying diesels were serviced by the White Motor Co. tandem axle tank trucks with sand hoppers and lube oil tanks. The merging of the Reading and Shamokin divisions had been proceeding in increments until the Shamokin Division was abolished and the Reading became a two division railroad. West Cressona remained the base of operations for the Schuylkill River basin with the facilities at St. Nicholas serving the few jobs in the area between Mahanoy City and Shamokin. The Atlas job was based at Tamaqua and served the area from Webster to Lofty and the Lehigh and New England as well as pushed the through freights to Mahanoy Tunnel or Lofty. Any coal traffic moved from West Cressona or St. Nick, usually in night time turn arounds, to Reading in order to have the units back for the day jobs.
