Central Railroad of New Jersey EMD F3A #57 leads a mix of EMD and ALCO power on train AC-3 west through Northampton. Train AC-3 would occasionally make a set out or pick up in the Northampton Yard under the 9th Street bridge.

Side comments about per diem and demurrage from Al Luedtke.

Back in those days per diem was $2.88 per day to whatever railroad had teh car on their line at midnight. This only applied to railroad owned and reporting-marked cars. Cars with an X at the end of their reporting marks (like GATX) were paid for on a mileage basis. The reason is that for demurrage purposes there was no demurrage charged for these cars if they were on track owned or leased by the shipped/consignee while railroad-owned cars were subject to demurrage after their placement, or constructive placement, after the free time expired, which was usually 48 hours. Weekends and holidays counted after the free time had expired, but not before it expired. If a railroad received an interchange car after midnight and were able to interchange it to another railroad before midnight, they paid no per diem, but they did pay the private car mileage. That is why railroads tried to get rid of as many cars before midnight. If the receiving railroad tried to hold out the interchange until after midnight, that did them no good since the cars would be constructively interchanged at 11:59 PM.
