Early diesel locomotives in the 1940's were a learning experience for the builders, railroad operating employees and the railroad shop mechanics. All early diesels had various degrees of problems. Railroad fans like to jump on and keep repeating that the Alco 244 engine had problems. Alco wasn't alone as every manufacturer came out with improvements and most became much better including the 244 engine. Often repeated early Alco problem was breaking the crankshaft. Well here is a broken crankshaft - but it is NOT Alco - it is from a V12 EMC (Winton). |
