Caption info by CNJ employee Fred Malchow:
Saturday train, most likely JH-1. The job had been reduced to a single side by this time that worked east M-W-F as HJ-2 and returned west as JH-1 on T-Th-Sa. The crew got a four hour call at Allentown and generally went on duty between 6 and 9 PM. The job was cheap and only paid the "Through Freight" rate with was $42 and change at this time. The idea was to make money in the form of deadhead mileage coming east and take a call to go west on eight hours rest, generally marking up between 1:30 and 3 PM at Elizabethport after bunking at the sumptuous "NX RX" (the Elizabeth Carteret Hotel - NX and RX were the respective telegraph calls for Elizabeth and Carteret). JH-1 never quite made the Blue Streak Merchandise look like a plug local but they got over the road quickly. It generally followed ES99 going west, picked up at Cranford or Plainfield on occasion (especially when the four track system still extended to Rock), of 6 and 8 at Somerville and High Bridge and then west to Allentown. The idea was to clear up on old Track 3 at Greens Bridge to afford #5703 a clear block at the west end of Hampton. The conductor would report clear from PU Tower and contact the Lehigh Valley operator at Easton from the same location. Most nights, the block was clear prior to #5703s time at Raritan, 6:19 PM. They were generally off the clock at XN by 8 or 8:30 PM. |
